The Weeknd boycotts Grammy Awards
The Weeknd never wants to compete for a Grammy Award again. The 31-year-old singer told The New York Times that he will boycott the music prize from now on. Earlier, Abel Tesfaye, as the singer is really called, called the Grammys corrupt after not being nominated this year.
His song Blinding Lights has been in the US top 10 for 52 weeks, a record. With that, The Weeknd was expected to be a major contender, according to the BBC. Yet he was not nominated for any of the 83 categories.
“Because of the secret committees, I no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys,” the singer told the newspaper. In doing so, he joins a list of black artists who are critical of the organization of the music event. Drake, Kanye West and Frank Ocean, among others, think the Grammy’s organization is corrupt.
